A motor starter-also known as a motor starting device-is an industrial apparatus designed to facilitate the startup of electric motors. It is primarily utilized in systems involving large motors and asynchronous motors, such as those found in water pumps, fans, and compressors.
Its core functions include suppressing starting currents, enabling soft stopping, braking, and providing protection against overload and phase loss. Based on their operating principles and structural designs, motor starters can be categorized into magnetic starters, reduced-voltage starters (such as Wye-Delta, resistor-type, and autotransformer starters), frequency-sensitive rheostat starters, soft starters, and variable frequency drives (VFDs). Soft starters employ a configuration of anti-parallel three-phase thyristors acting as voltage regulators; by controlling the conduction angle, they modulate the motor's input voltage to achieve a smooth startup. Some patented designs incorporate a double-break contact structure, while integrated solutions utilize adjustable mounting mechanisms to accommodate equipment of varying dimensions.
