Product Introduction

The Allen-Bradley 140M-C2E-B16 is a three-pole motor protection circuit-breaker designed for manual switching and protection of small three-phase motors. It combines thermal overload protection with magnetic short-circuit protection in a compact device from the Bulletin 140M range.

Its adjustable overload setting covers 1–1.6 A, allowing the protection level to be matched to the motor's rated current. The magnetic trip is fixed at approximately 13–14 times the maximum setting current, providing short-circuit response without requiring a separate magnetic adjustment. A differential release mechanism also provides phase-loss sensitivity.

The 140M-C2E-B16 is rated for applications up to 690V AC under the applicable IEC ratings. Its three-pole construction and screw-terminal connections make it suitable for installation in motor control assemblies where manual isolation and motor branch protection are required.

Protection and Operating Characteristics

Thermal overload protection

The adjustable 1–1.6 A range allows the overload release to be set according to the connected motor's rated current. The device uses a Class 10 trip characteristic.

Magnetic short-circuit protection

The magnetic trip is factory fixed at approximately 13–14 times the maximum current setting. The published magnetic trip current is 21 A.

Phase-loss sensitivity

The differential release responds to phase failure conditions, helping protect three-phase motors against damage associated with loss of a supply phase.

Manual switching and isolation

The rotary operating mechanism provides local manual operation for switching and isolation of the motor circuit.

Typical Applications

  • Small three-phase motor branch circuits
  • Motor control panels and starter assemblies
  • Industrial machinery with low-current motors
  • Auxiliary motor circuits in production equipment
  • Motor installations requiring combined overload and short-circuit protection

Installation and Selection Notes

The 140M-C2E-B16 belongs to the C-frame Bulletin 140M family. Its 1–1.6 A adjustment range is an important selection criterion: the motor's nameplate current should fall within this range, and the setting should follow the motor and installation requirements.

Rockwell's published data identifies compatible contactor arrangements for specific coordination applications, including 100-C09 and 100-K05 configurations. The applicable combination and short-circuit coordination rating should be checked against the installation voltage and relevant Rockwell documentation before selection.

This model does not have an integrated auxiliary switch or undervoltage release. Such functions should not be assumed to be included in the base device.

Product Status and Replacement Reference

Rockwell Automation lists the 140M-C2E-B16 as discontinued, effective February 25, 2022. Rockwell identifies 140MT-C3E-B16 as an engineering replacement reference. This designation should not be interpreted as an unconditional drop-in replacement; verify the electrical ratings, installation arrangement and application requirements before substitution.
